1st graders don’t need homework. or they shouldn’t have so much that learning is associated with drudgery.
Addition and subtraction facts and spelling lists that go into word searches or crossword puzzles.
My son has to study spelling words each week for a test of Friday, study site words and gets a book to read and has to write a paper on it each week. It’s a short book and has to write name title something about book like plot or who you liked in it or what happen it in the story.
I feel that first graders should not have any required homework. They are 6 and 7 years old, learning for 8 hours a day, when they get home they just need to do their chore and relax.
my 1st grader is ASKED to read for 20 min every evening…I think that that is just fine!
well……how does the opinion of a 1st grade teacher sound?
something that i do differently compared to most classes, is that i send home a packet of homework each monday, and expect it to be returned on friday. the kids then have a whole week to pace themselves. not to mention it is easier for them to keep track of an actual packet vs single slips of paper.
we have 6 new spelling words each week, and i expect the kids to write each word 5 times, and to write a sentence with each….they need to write a journal entry (3-5 sentences) about what we are covering in science or social studies…….i ask that they read (or be read to) for 10-15 minutes every night…..they also put a list of 10-15 words in ABC order…..and i also send home 2 math worksheets attached to the packet.
it may sound like a lot or a little depending on what you are used to. all i know is that my kids think it is fun, and often ask me for extra homework. i guess that is all in the attitude of the teacher/students though.
i live in ohio and my kindergardeners work pretains to telling time addition.subtractions. and 10 spelling words a week and here is a list for this week den, hen, men, pen, ten, then, when, has ,hold ,that plus he is writing scentences i cant believe how much they are craming into these little kids in a weeks time not to mention the home work at least 2 times a week they already know how to spell and write their colors its crazy yes i want my kid to learn but i think it overwelms them at times
